Convertible Car Seats

Convertible car seats can be used longer by your child because they can be used rear-facing until your child grows to the size and weight for a forward-facing car seat. At this time you simply "convert" your convertible to a forward-facing seat.

Infant Convertible Car Seat

Even though you can get by with a convertible car seat from infant to toddler you will find that the convertible car seat is bulkier and usually heavier than an infant-only car seat.

Convertibles do not come with carrying handles like infant-only seats or do they have a separate base.

Convertible Child Car Seat

The convertible child car seat is ideal for bigger infants because they have higher read-facing weight and height limits than an infant-only seat has.

They also have 2 types of harnesses: a 5-point harness which attaches at the shoulders, hips and between the legs; an overhead shield harness which is a padded tray-like shield that swings down over the child.

Convertible Baby Car Seats

It is best for your child to ride rear-facing until they reach the highest height and weight allowed by the car seat manufacturer. The child should then ride forward-facing with a harness until they outgrow the seat which is usually around 4 year of age and around 40 to 65 lbs.

Convertable Car Seats

When you switch from rear-facing to forward-facing you may have to adjust the recline angle of the seat. If your vehicle has active front passenger air bags then never place a rear-facing car safety seat in the front seat.

Also, make certain that your car seat is at the correct angle when rear-facing so that your infant's head does not flop forward. Many of the convertible seats have angle indicators to help with this positioning.

Convertible Car Seat Safety

If your child is riding in a car with someone else be sure the car safety seat they are using is appropriate for the car they are using. Also be sure that the person driving the other car knows how to properly install and use the car seat correctly.
